What is Proposition 8? Yes on Proposition 8 will add the words "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California" to the California State Constitution.
The law in California already provides marriage-related benefits to civil unions and domestic partnerships. Yes on Proposition 8 will not diminish these benefits. Proposition 8 is not a debate regarding homosexuality or their rights, but a stand to uphold and preserve the definition and sanctity of marriage.
In "The Devine Institution of Marriage" regarding this issue the LDS Church stated, "We can express genuine love and friendship for the homosexual family member or friend without accepting the practice of homosexuality or any re-definition of marriage . . . .Tolerance as a gospel principle means love and forgiveness of one another, not “tolerating” transgression."
This is not a matter of civil rights nor is it a political issue. It is an issue of morality. "Responsible citizens and government officials everywhere," have been called upon "to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society” (Proclamation on the Family). We all can help in supporting this proposition regardless of where we live.
Please join us in supporting Proposition 8. Contact any friends and/or family you have in California; educate them and encourage them to vote Yes on Proposition 8. Post on your blog, facebook, myspace, etc., do whatever you can. Contact your local church leaders to see how you can help within your community. This is our chance to stand together as Christians and members of other various faiths - to do our part and become unified in this great purpose of protecting what is so sacred to us, and so fundamental to God's plan.
